The Short Version of a Air Compressors Buying Guide.

THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE PURCHASING YOUR NEW COMPRESSOR.

1.  HOW MUCH CFM DO YOU NEED.?  PLEASE RESEARCH THE CFM NEEDED FOR YOU TOOLS.

2.  WHILE EVERYONE IS SO PRICE CONSCIENCE TODAY,  THINK ABOUT GETTING YOUR NEW COMPRESSOR HOME, ONLY TO FIND OUT YOU BOUGHT BY PRICE, AND NOT BY CFM NEEDED.

 3.  IT'S A VERY COMMON MISTAKE,  MADE BY MANY.   THE PROBLEM IS NOT THE COMPRESSOR, BUT THE PURCHASER WHO BOUGHT BY PRICE, AND NOT BY THE CFM HE NEEDS.  YES, I DID IT TOO, ON MY FIRST COMPRESSOR, 40 YEARS AGO, AND THE MEMORY STILL BOTHERS ME.

How Do I Determine How Much CFM I Need?

The chart below will give you some common air tools and their approx. CFM requirements.

Air Tool________ Average CFM @ 90 PSI

7" Disc Grinder 5 to 8 CFM

Brad Nailer 0.35

Air Chisel 3 - 11

Cut-Off Tool  4 - 10

Dual Sander 11 - 15

Die Grinder 4 - 7

3/8" Impact Wrench 3 - 4

1/2" Impact Wrench 4 - 6

1" Impact Gun 10-12

Needle Scaler 8-16

Using an air tool on a continual basis, like a orbital sander on a car, it a good idea to multiply the average

CFM x 4 to get the continual CFM of a tool.

so a continual orbital sander would need approx. 24 to 36 CFM @ 90 PSI

.  It's easy to see that the single stage compressors will only run a orbital sander a few minutes before you would have to stop to let the compressor catch up. NOT A PROBLEM IF YOU HAVE TIME ON YOUR HANDS. PLEASE DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY.
